📖 About This Certification

In-depth CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) preparation covering all five exam domains: General Security Concepts; Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations; Security Architecture; Security Operations; and Security Program Management and Oversight. A common starting point for a cybersecurity career.

This preparation material contains 50 course lessons, a practice test drawn from a bank of 100 questions and a timed exam simulator.

🎯 Exam Domains

  • General Security Concepts (12%)
  • Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations (22%)
  • Security Architecture (18%)
  • Security Operations (28%)
  • Security Program Management and Oversight (20%)

Five domains and weights from CompTIA's Security+ (SY0-701, V7) exam objectives. Check CompTIA for current details.

What the CompTIA Security+ practice questions exercise

This is the broadest set of the five, because the certification it prepares for is the broadest: it is written for someone at the start of a security career rather than for a specialist. CompTIA's SY0-701 objectives group the exam into five domains - general security concepts; threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations; security architecture; security operations; and security program management and oversight - and each is asked at a level that assumes you have met the idea before, not that you have owned it in production.

Threat-and-vulnerability questions tend to be scenario-based: a short description of behaviour is given and you identify what it represents, which rewards recognition over recall. Architecture questions ask how a design should be arranged; operations questions ask which mechanism or response fits a situation - authentication, access control, monitoring or incident handling. Program management and oversight covers risk treatment, compliance and governance.

  • General security concepts: controls, core principles and cryptographic basics
  • Threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations: recognising behaviour from a description
  • Security architecture: arranging a design securely, including cloud and virtualised systems
  • Security operations: choosing the mechanism or response that fits a situation
  • Security program management and oversight: risk treatment, compliance and governance

How to use the Security+ practice material

Because the set is broad, breadth-first revision feels productive and is not. Start by taking a mixed session to find the weakest areas, then work those alone until the explanations stop teaching you something new. The areas you find easiest are the ones to revisit last, with a short mixed set, purely to keep them available.

  1. Take a mixed session first and record the per-area result rather than the total.
  2. Re-read only the explanations for questions you answered incorrectly or by elimination; those are where the reasoning is still missing.
  3. Group the material you keep getting wrong by idea rather than by question - authentication mechanisms, encryption types, attack categories - and revise the idea.
  4. Finish with a session in the simulator so the timing of your weakest area is practised, not just its content.

The simulator mixes question styles, including questions that ask you to interpret a configuration or a scenario rather than select a fact. Practise them last, once the fact-level material is stable.

Where candidates lose marks on Security+ questions

The commonest error at this level is confusing two things that are genuinely similar: two encryption types, two authentication factors, two attack variants. The questions are usually written to separate exactly those pairs, so the distinguishing detail is in the question and the difference is in the option. Reading the requirement before the options is what prevents it.

The second error is answering a governance question with an operational one, or the reverse. A scenario about a policy or a risk obligation is not answered by a tool, even when the tool would be part of the eventual solution. The third is choosing an option because it is more specific, when the question asked for the category rather than the instance.

Planning the preparation time

The broadest set is the one where an even spread of time across every area is easiest to choose and least useful, because the first mixed session already records which areas are weak. Work from that record rather than from how each area felt while you were answering it; confidence is a poor guide here, since an area can feel straightforward and still be the one where two similar options are separated by a single detail.

  • Keep the first per-area result and plan from it rather than from how the session felt.
  • Treat an easy-feeling area as suspect if the options were close together.
  • Revise wrong answers by idea, grouping questions that failed for the same reason.
  • Finish with the simulator so timing is practised across every area.
