The United States Postal Service is one of the largest employers in the country, and nearly every entry-level job requires passing a Virtual Entry Assessment (VEA) first: exam 474 for carriers, 475 for mail handlers, 476 for processing clerks and 477 for customer service clerks. The VEA replaced the old Postal Exam 473 and focuses on work scenarios, your work history and approach — not memorised facts.

ℹ️ This preparation guide is independent and is not official USPS material. It summarizes publicly available candidate guidance, including the USPS Virtual Entry Assessment candidate guide, and helps you practice similar question styles. Requirements vary by position and posting. Always follow the instructions in your own application and invitation email.
⚠️ The Virtual Entry Assessment includes questions about your actual work history and approach. Answer truthfully — the assessment is designed to compare related answers, and your responses may be discussed later in the process.

📋 Ansettelsesprosessen

  • 1
Search & Apply on the USPS Careers Site Oppgitt av arbeidsgiveren
Create a candidate profile and apply to a specific posting. Each posting names the assessment it requires.
→ Set up job alerts — popular postings can close quickly once enough applications arrive
  • 2
Virtual Entry Assessment Invitation Oppgitt av arbeidsgiveren
After applying you receive an emailed invitation to complete the required VEA online. USPS candidate guidance describes a 72-hour window from the invitation to finish the assessment.
→ Don't sit on the email — plan a quiet 45–60 minute block within the window and complete it in one sitting
  • 3
Scoring & Eligibility Oppgitt av arbeidsgiveren
You receive a score; candidates above the eligibility threshold enter the pool for that posting. Higher scores are generally contacted first.
→ Treat the VEA as a competition, not a pass/fail formality — your score determines where you sit on the list
  • 4
Interview and/or Selection Steps Avhenger av stillingen
Depending on the position and district: an interview, document verification, and for driving positions a review of your driving record and a road test.
→ For carrier roles, get your driving record clean and documentation ready early
  • 5
Background Check, Drug Screen & Onboarding Oppgitt av arbeidsgiveren
Conditional hires complete fingerprinting, a background investigation, a drug screen and orientation before starting.
→ Respond to every request promptly — onboarding stalls are usually documentation stalls

📝 Tester og vurderinger

Virtual Entry Assessment — Core Sections (All Versions) Situasjonsvurdering

All four VEA versions are built from shared exercise types described in USPS candidate guidance: Work Scenarios (choose the most and least effective responses to job situations), Tell Us Your Story (structured work-history questions) and Describe Your Approach (personality-style statements about how you work). The scenario and self-description sections are untimed (the error-checking exercise on exams 475 and 476 is speeded); most candidates report finishing the whole assessment in 30–45 minutes. Exam 474 also includes a What Drives You motivation section.

Måler: Judgement in realistic postal work situations, dependability, customer orientation, honesty and consistency of self-description

  • In Work Scenarios, prioritize safety, service and following procedure — in that spirit, not in conflict
  • Answer work-history questions accurately; related questions cross-check each other
  • Avoid extreme self-ratings you can't support — keep answers consistent and honest rather than inflated
  • Complete the assessment in one quiet sitting even though it is untimed

Vanlige feil

  • Treating 'untimed' as 'casual' and answering carelessly late in the assessment
  • Picking the most aggressive customer-pleasing option when procedure clearly applies
  • Inconsistent answers between the story and approach sections
  • Missing the 72-hour completion window entirely
Check for Errors (475 / 476) & Work Your Register (477) accuracy speed

Two exercise types appear only on specific exams. Check for Errors, on the mail handler (475) and processing clerk (476) exams, shows pairs of numbers (candidate reports describe eight-digit strings) to compare quickly for exact matches. Work Your Register, on the customer service clerk exam (477), simulates counter transactions: charging correct amounts and giving correct change.

Måler: Speed and accuracy of detail comparison, basic transaction arithmetic, sustained concentration

  • Practice data-checking drills daily — accuracy first, then speed
  • Compare strings systematically (chunk digits in groups) instead of eyeballing
  • Rehearse mental change-making from common amounts ($5, $10, $20)
  • Short daily sessions beat one long cram — this is a trainable skill

Vanlige feil

  • Scanning for 'looks the same' instead of checking character by character
  • Letting speed collapse accuracy in the final questions
  • Skipping arithmetic practice because 'the register does it' — the exercise doesn't

🎤 Intervjuer

Structured Selection Interview (Role-Dependent)

Not every posting interviews every eligible candidate, but when interviews happen they are structured and practical: reliability, availability for early/weekend shifts, safe working, service at the counter or on the route, and how you handle repetitive work.

Format: In-person or virtual structured interview, commonly 20–40 minutes, with a supervisor or selection panel

Hva intervjuere ser etter

  • Dependable attendance and punctuality
  • Realistic understanding of the job's physical and schedule demands
  • Customer-service instincts for public-facing roles
  • Safety awareness, especially for carriers and machine operators

Temaer du kan øve på

  • Why this postal role, and what your availability really is
  • A time your accuracy mattered under time pressure
  • Handling an upset customer at a busy counter
  • Working safely and independently on a route
  • Bring concrete attendance and reliability evidence from past work
  • Show you understand what the specific job actually involves day to day
  • For carrier roles, address weather, walking distance and driving directly
  • Prepare STAR stories about accuracy, service and staying calm with difficult customers

The Postal Service hires at enormous volume and gates nearly every entry posting behind a Virtual Entry Assessment: exam 474 for carriers, 475 for mail handlers, 476 for mail processing clerks and 477 for customer service clerks, completed within 72 hours of the emailed invitation and scored competitively - 70 or higher to reach the eligible list, with higher scores contacted first and a one-year retake lockout if you fail. Maintenance and vehicle trades instead sit the multi-craft Postal Exam 955, and supervisory tracks run through 204B details and EAS postings. A city carrier in Philadelphia and a VMF automotive technician face completely different exams. Find your craft in the list and rehearse the exam number its posting names.

City Carrier Assistant (CCA) to City Carrier (Exam 474)

City Delivery

City Carrier Assistants deliver and collect mail on foot and mounted routes, often on rotating schedules and weekends, before converting to career city carrier in the NALC-represented craft. Route casing, DPS mail handling, scanner-based street operations and heavy parcel volume define the day, and all-weather foot routes with mounted dismounts mean carriers own mail security and customer contact standards personally.

Slik ansetter USPS til denne typen stilling: The Virtual Entry Assessment 474 combines Work Scenarios (most and least effective choices), Tell Us Your Story, Describe Your Approach and the What Drives You motivation section, all within 72 hours of invitation. Scoring 70+ reaches the eligible list - higher scores are contacted first - and a driving record review and road test follow for mounted routes, plus a structured interview on reliability and safe work.

Hvorfor denne pakken: The 474 is a work-scenario test at heart: most/least-effective SJT drills mirror the Work Scenarios section exactly, and consistent personality practice maps to the Describe Your Approach cross-checks. Safe-driving study material supports the driving screen and road test mounted carriers face. Numerical practice handles time-allowance and count basics, and interview-prep builds the reliability-and-safety stories the structured interview scores. Senior carriers pursuing 204B details add structured judgment and career-planning depth.

CCA hiring is decided by the 474 - scenario ranking, consistent self-description and the driving screen carry the whole process.

🏛️ Verdier og rammeverk

What USPS Selection Emphasizes

USPS candidate guidance and the VEA's exercise types consistently emphasize a specific profile rather than a published values slogan: dependable attendance, accuracy under pace, safe working, and courteous service to every customer. Aim your answers and stories at these four pillars.

Dependability & attendance Accuracy & attention to detail Safety awareness Courteous public service
  • Lead with reliability: your record of showing up and delivering
  • Show systematic habits that protect accuracy when work is repetitive
  • Treat safety as non-negotiable in every scenario answer
  • Keep service courteous and procedural — helpful without breaking rules
  • Be consistent across sections; the assessment compares related answers

⏱️ Øvingsplaner

  • Read your posting's job description so scenarios have context
  • Complete one situational judgement practice set
  • Do one short data-checking drill (exact-match comparisons)
  • Plan your quiet 60-minute window inside the 72-hour completion period
  • Daily SJT practice with most/least-effective style answers
  • Write out your work history once — dates, duties, reasons for leaving — so story answers stay consistent
  • Daily 10-minute error-checking drill for 475/476 applicants
  • Rehearse mental change-making from $5, $10 and $20
  • Alternate SJT and accuracy drills daily, reviewing every miss
  • Take one practice session at the same time of day you plan to sit the VEA
  • For carriers: review your driving record and gather documents early
  • For clerk roles: practice polite, procedural responses to difficult-customer scenarios
  • Do one full untimed practice run in a single sitting to build stamina
  • Reach stable accuracy on error-checking before pushing speed
  • Build consistency: retake similar SJT sets and compare your answers
  • Prepare STAR stories on reliability, accuracy and service for a possible interview
  • Research the specific facility or route type you applied to
  • Keep daily practice short and regular — steadiness, not cramming, is what this assessment calls for

Vanlige spørsmål

Which USPS exam do I need to take?
It depends on the job: exam 474 for city and rural carriers, 475 for mail handlers, 476 for mail processing clerks and 477 for customer service clerks. The posting you apply to names the required assessment — you don't choose it yourself.
How long do I have to complete the Virtual Entry Assessment?
USPS candidate guidance describes a 72-hour window from the emailed invitation. Most sections are untimed (the error-checking exercise on 475/476 is speeded); most candidates report finishing in 30–45 minutes. Plan one quiet sitting well before the deadline.
What score do I need, and can I retake it?
Candidate guidance describes a minimum eligible score of 70, with higher scorers generally contacted first. If you score below the threshold, sources consistently report a one-year wait before retaking that exam version — so prepare before your first attempt.
Is the VEA like the old Postal Exam 473?
No. The VEA replaced exam 473 in 2019 and is a different style of assessment: work scenarios, structured work-history questions and approach questions, with the error-checking exercise on the 475/476 and the register exercise on the 477. Study materials for the old 473 are largely obsolete.
Can I take the assessment on my phone?
USPS guidance allows computers, tablets and smartphones with a reliable connection. A larger screen makes the comparison and scenario questions easier to read, so use a computer if you can.
