🌍 Language proficiency exams

Language Proficiency Tests

Job Tests Portal covers six language exams: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Norskprøven C1, DELE C1, Digital TestDaF and DALF C1. Each one has a structured course and a timed exam simulator built around the real exam's sections (some drills are stricter than the real test), both included in a subscription. The comparison table below sets out who runs each exam, its level or scale, total duration and delivery format, and links the exam body's own site, so you can confirm dates, fees and sample material at the source before you book.

Language exam questions, answered

Which language exams does Job Tests Portal prepare you for?

Six. IELTS and TOEFL iBT for English, Norskprøven C1 – høyere akademisk nivå for Norwegian, DELE C1 for Spanish, the Digital TestDaF for German and DALF C1 for French. Each one has its own structured course and its own timed exam simulator, and each exam page links the exam body's own site for dates, fees and sample material.

Are the language practice tests free?

The exam bodies' own sample material is free, and it is the place to start. ielts.org publishes sample test questions for IELTS Academic and General Training; ETS's TOEFL iBT preparation page lists an interactive sample and two full-length practice tests marked free; and prove.hkdir.no, examenes.cervantes.es, testdaf.de and france-education-international.fr all publish sample tasks at no cost. Every exam page on this site links that material. Job Tests Portal's own practice is not free: on the website the six language courses and their exam simulators are subscription features and you need an account to open them.

Is the Bergenstest the same as Norskprøven C1?

No. They are two separate tests. Norskprøven C1 – høyere akademisk nivå is run by HK-dir and measures only C1. It is built on integrated tasks: you listen and then write, and you read and then speak, and the result is C1 or Ikke bestått — there is no B2 fallback. Test i norsk – høyere nivå, known as the Bergenstest, is run by Folkeuniversitetet and measures B2 and C1, with a separate written test and oral test. Our Norwegian course and simulator give practice in the two-part structure of Norskprøven C1; they are not Bergenstest preparation.

Do you prepare for DELF or the Goethe-Zertifikat?

No. For French we cover DALF C1, the advanced diploma; DELF is its lower-level sibling for the A1 to B2 levels and we do not have a DELF course. For German we cover the Digital TestDaF; the Goethe-Zertifikat is a different German exam from a different body and is not in our catalogue.

What changed in the TOEFL in January 2026?

ETS substantially redesigned the TOEFL iBT in January 2026. It now runs about two hours, Reading and Listening are multistage adaptive, the tasks mix daily-life and academic material, and each section reports a 1–6 band scale aligned to the CEFR, with comparable 0–120 scores reported in parallel until 2028. Our TOEFL material is being progressively aligned to that format, so prepare from 2026-format sources rather than older books.

How long does each exam take and how is it scored?

IELTS runs 2 hours 45 minutes and reports a 9-band scale in half bands. The TOEFL iBT runs about 2 hours and reports a 1–6 band per section. Norskprøven C1 runs about 3 hours 15 minutes across two subtests and is graded C1 or Ikke bestått. DELE C1 runs about 4 hours 20 minutes out of 100 points, with a minimum in each skill group. The Digital TestDaF runs about 3 hours 10 minutes and reports TDN 3 to TDN 5 per skill. DALF C1 is about 4 hours of written papers plus a roughly 30-minute oral, out of 100 points.

Which exam do I need for university admission?

That depends on the language of instruction and on the institution's own rule, so check its admissions page before you book. In practice IELTS and TOEFL iBT are the English tests universities ask for; for Norwegian-language study, check which Norwegian test the institution accepts, because HK-dir's Norskprøven C1 and Folkeuniversitetet's Bergenstest are different tests; DELE C1 supports the Spanish PCE admission pathway; TDN 4 in all four parts of the Digital TestDaF is the standard German university benchmark; and DALF C1 is the advanced French diploma.

Do the results expire?

It varies by exam, and the exam body's own page is the authority. IELTS results carry a recommended validity of two years and TOEFL scores are valid for two years. HK-dir states no expiry for Norskprøven C1, although institutions may apply their own recency rules. The DELE and DALF diplomas never expire. Digital TestDaF results are unlimited, although some universities ask for results less than two years old.
