Similar Triangles & Indirect Measurement
Learning Objectives
- Identify similar triangles
- Use proportions to find missing sides
- Apply to real-world measurement
Key Concepts
Similar Triangles
Same shape, proportional sides, equal angles
Scale Factor
The ratio between corresponding sides
Theory
**Similar triangles** have equal corresponding angles and proportional sides.
**AA Similarity:** Two pairs of equal angles → triangles are similar.
**Shadow problems:** An object and its shadow form a right triangle similar to another object and its shadow.
If △ABC ~ △DEF, then: AB/DE = BC/EF = AC/DF
Examples
A 6ft person casts an 8ft shadow. A tree casts 32ft shadow.
Solution: 6/8 = x/32 → x = 24ft tall
