Fraction Fundamentals
Learning Objectives
- Understand fractions as parts of a whole
- Compare fractions with different denominators
- Add and subtract fractions
Key Concepts
Numerator
The top number - how many parts we have
Denominator
The bottom number - total equal parts
Equivalent Fractions
Different fractions that represent the same value
Theory
A fraction represents part of a whole. The denominator tells us how many equal parts, and the numerator tells us how many of those parts we have.
**Visual Representation:**
- ½ means 1 out of 2 equal parts
- ¾ means 3 out of 4 equal parts
**Finding Equivalent Fractions:**
Multiply or divide both numerator and denominator by the same number:
½ = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 (all equal!)
Examples
Are ²⁄₄ and ½ equivalent?
Solution: Yes! 2÷2=1 and 4÷2=2, so ²⁄₄ = ½
