The value of a digit depends on its position in a number.

Theory
Place value is the foundation of our number system. Each position in a number has a value 10 times the position to its right.
**Powers of Ten:**
- Ones (10⁰) = 1
- Tens (10¹) = 10
- Hundreds (10²) = 100
- Thousands (10³) = 1,000
In the number 5,432:
- 5 is in the thousands place → 5 × 1,000 = 5,000
- 4 is in the hundreds place → 4 × 100 = 400
- 3 is in the tens place → 3 × 10 = 30
- 2 is in the ones place → 2 × 1 = 2
Examples
What is the value of 7 in 7,234?
Solution: 7,000 (7 × 1,000)
Write 5,000 + 300 + 20 + 8 in standard form
Solution: 5,328
