45 min Grade 4 Interactive Math Lab

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the value of digits based on their position
  • Read and write multi-digit numbers
  • Compare and order numbers up to millions

Key Concepts

Place Value

The value of a digit depends on its position in a number.

Standard Form

Writing a number using digits (e.g., 3,456)

Expanded Form

Writing a number as the sum of the values of each digit

Theory

Place value is the foundation of our number system. Each position in a number has a value 10 times the position to its right. **Powers of Ten:** - Ones (10⁰) = 1 - Tens (10¹) = 10 - Hundreds (10²) = 100 - Thousands (10³) = 1,000 In the number 5,432: - 5 is in the thousands place → 5 × 1,000 = 5,000 - 4 is in the hundreds place → 4 × 100 = 400 - 3 is in the tens place → 3 × 10 = 30 - 2 is in the ones place → 2 × 1 = 2
