🎯 What is TOEFL iBT?
The TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language - Internet Based Test) is the world's most widely accepted English-language test for academic purposes. It is developed and administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and accepted by more than 12,000 universities and institutions in over 160 countries.
The test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. It evaluates how well you combine your listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills to perform academic tasks.
📋 Test Format (Enhanced July 2023)
The TOEFL iBT was updated in July 2023 to be shorter and more efficient while maintaining the same high-quality assessment.

Total Test Time: Approximately 2 hours. ETS notes that because Reading and Listening are multistage adaptive, actual item counts and timing can vary slightly from test to test.
Total Score: Each of the four sections is scored on a 1-6 scale; the overall score is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest half band. During a two-year transition period after the January 2026 redesign, ETS also reports a comparable overall score on the legacy 0-120 scale.

Reading Section

- Write for an Academic Discussion — respond to a classroom discussion prompt
Speaking Section
▼Two task types, 11 items total in ~8 minutes — replaces the previous 4-task (independent + 3 integrated) format entirely.
- Listen and Repeat — listen to and repeat seven sentences about a campus or daily-life topic
- Take an Interview — a simulated interview on a familiar topic, with 3-4 follow-up questions
