PMP Exam Guide 2026: New Domains, Format & How to Qualify
What changed in July 2026, what the exam actually tests, what it costs, and the exact eligibility rules — in plain language.
On July 9, 2026, PMI launched a refreshed PMP® exam — new domain weightings, PMBOK® Guide 8th-edition alignment, and new emphasis on AI and sustainability in project work. A lot of study advice written before that date is now out of date.
What changed in July 2026: the new exam content outline
PMI periodically refreshes the exam to match how project work is actually done. The July 2026 refresh is a significant one. The three domains kept their names, but their weights moved substantially — Business Environment jumped from a minor 8% to a full quarter of the exam — and the content now aligns with the PMBOK® Guide 8th edition, with new situational content on using AI responsibly in projects and on sustainability considerations.

Exam format
The exam is 180 questions with about four hours of seat time, taken at a Pearson VUE test center or online proctored. Question styles include situational multiple-choice and multiple-response items, matching, hotspot, drag-and-drop, and multi-question case-study sets. Most questions are scenario-based: they describe a project situation and ask what you should do next, which is why memorizing definitions alone rarely feels sufficient in the room.
Who can apply (eligibility)
PMI's published eligibility rules have two main paths:
- With a four-year degree: 36 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years, plus 35 hours of project-management education (or an active CAPM® certification instead of the education hours).
- With a secondary diploma (high school or associate degree): 60 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years, plus the same 35-hour education requirement (or CAPM®).
"Leading projects" does not mean you held the job title project manager — engineers, team leads and coordinators who directed the work of others on projects can qualify when the work is described in those terms. Our application guide walks through how to describe that experience.

A realistic timeline
For most working professionals the journey looks like: 1–2 weeks (often a focused weekend of actual work) to assemble and submit the application, up to a week for PMI to review it (longer if selected for an audit), then typically 6–12 weeks of study at 5–10 hours per week before exam day. Booking the exam slot early — right after approval of the application — is the single best forcing function for a study schedule.

Frequently asked questions
Is the PMP exam harder after the July 2026 update?
PMI does not describe the refresh as harder or easier — it is different: Business Environment grew from 8% to 26% of questions, content follows the PMBOK Guide 8th edition, and new scenarios cover AI and sustainability. Candidates who prepared with pre-2026 materials should re-weight their study plan.
How many questions is the PMP exam in 2026?
180 questions with roughly four hours of seat time, per PMI's published exam information. A small number of questions are unscored pretest items, which PMI does not identify during the exam.
Do I need the exact job title of project manager to qualify?
No. PMI's experience rule is about leading and directing project work, not job titles. Engineers, analysts, team leads and coordinators who directed others' work on projects can qualify — the application just has to describe that leadership clearly.
Can I take the PMP exam online?
Yes — PMI offers online proctored delivery as well as Pearson VUE test centers. The rules for the online option (room scan, ID, no interruptions) are on pmi.org.
