The audit is the most feared and least understood step of the PMP® journey — mostly because the loudest stories online are from people who improvised their application. If your application was accurate, the audit is paperwork, not peril.
When and why audits happen
Audit selection happens after payment, before you can schedule the exam. PMI describes the selection as random rather than triggered by anything in your application — being selected is not an accusation. The audit exists to keep the credential meaningful: every certification holder attested to the same rules, and spot-checking keeps those attestations honest.
Exactly what you send
Per PMI's certification handbook, an audited candidate submits:
- Education proof — a copy of your degree, diploma or global equivalent.
- Experience verification — for each project on the application, a form signed by your supervisor, manager or sponsor for that project confirming your role and hours. Forms go back to PMI through the submission process specified in the audit notice — today typically PMI's online audit submission (historically, sealed envelopes).

Timelines
PMI's handbook allows 90 days to return audit materials, and states that complete audit packages are usually processed in roughly five to seven business days. In practice the critical path is almost always collecting supervisor signatures — start there. Your one-year exam window begins after the audit clears.
Outcomes
Three outcomes exist. A cleared audit lets you schedule the exam. An incomplete response (missing documents, unreturned forms, or choosing not to proceed) typically ends the application under PMI's refund and reapplication terms. A finding of false information is treated far more seriously under PMI's policies and can affect future eligibility.
