Band 0–9
9-band scoring scale
📊 Band Score System
IELTS uses a 9-band scale to report results. Each of the four sections is scored individually, and an overall band score is calculated as their average.
| Band | CEFR | Skill Level | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.0–9.0 | C2 | Expert / Very Good | Fully operational command of English with rare inaccuracies |
| 7.0–7.5 | C1 | Good User | Operational command with occasional inaccuracies |
| 6.0–6.5 | B2 | Competent User | Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies |
| 5.0–5.5 | B1 | Modest User | Partial command, coping with overall meaning in most situations |
Common Requirements
Most UK and Australian universities require Band 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Top-tier programs often require Band 7.0+. Immigration to Australia, Canada, and the UK typically requires Band 6.0–7.0 depending on visa category.
